Termites
are very common in Australia and they are so tiny, that they are hard
to locate. But they are responsible for damages worth billions of
dollars in Australia and other countries of the world as well. Spring
is the time that they start infesting your property and you need to
take fast and timely action in order to prevent them.
There
are different types of termites and they thrive in your property
without any initial signs of damage. The subterranean termites are
the ones that live in the soil.
Termites
settle in areas where they there is source of wood for them. They eat
cellulose that is present in the wood and unprotected home is where
they infest more as there are numerous sources of cellulose for them
like window panes, doors, untreated tables, chairs and everything
else that is made from wood. Termites also need moisture to survive
and it is hard to find them. Sometimes we end up seeing them when
there is some kind of repair work is going on or we see mud trail in
the floor. Termites thrive better in soft wood as that is easier for
them to process. According to experts, the following things can
prevent termite infestation to a great extent. They are:
- Mulch and excess plant cover should be kept away from the home.
- Firewood and lumber should be stacked away from the home and the foundation.
- Water should be diverted away from the foundation.
- Pipe leaks should be repaired and entry points should be sealed.
- There should be proper ventilation.
- Air tight containers should be used.
